  4. No kettle? Try electric

The hot water bag is in almost every Pakistani home — cheap, simple and it works during load-shedding. But burns from hot water bags are common, almost always from boiling water or a loose stopper. Here is how to use one safely.

How to fill it

  1. Hot tap water, not boiling. If you use a kettle, let the water cool for a few minutes first.
  2. Fill about two-thirds. Hold the bag upright by the neck and pour slowly.
  3. Let the air out. Lay it flat and press gently until water reaches the neck.
  4. Close tightly and turn it upside down to check for leaks.
  5. Use a cover or wrap it in a towel.

Care and replacement

  • Empty after use and hang upside down to dry with the stopper off.
  • Keep away from sunlight, heaters and sharp objects.
  • Replace every couple of years — or at once if the rubber cracks, gets sticky or leaks.

No kettle? Try electric

An electric heat pouch charges in minutes with no water to boil. See hot water bag vs electric heating pad.
